Southwark and South London Society of Organists Newsletter October 27th, 2022

From the Chair of the Society, John Webber:

Recent meeting

The annual meal on October 15th. was well supported by members and their guests. We were at Brasserie Blanc in Chancery Lane, off Fleet Street. The food was excellent. Our guest speaker was Revd Canon Dr Gordon Giles from Rochester. Thanks to Peter Smith for organising this. Do put October 14th. into the back of your diaries, when our speaker will be the Archdeacon of Southwark, the Ven. Jonathan Sedgwick.

Forthcoming event

Do bring music to play. On Saturday, November 19th. we have two churches in Streatham ready to meet us: at 2.30p.m. we are due at Christ Church, the Italianate church on the A.205 South Circular Road, where their new organist Francis Bushell hopes to welcome us. (3 Christchurch Road, SW2 3ET.) We move on to St. Peter’s, Leigham Court Road, SW16 2SD for a 4.30p.m. start. The Director of Music, James Furniss-Roe, and longstanding choir member David Chapman will meet us. (We are hoping that there will be tea and coffee.) From Streatham High Road, you can take the 417 bus from Brixton bus garage to St. Peter’s; there may even be a stop closer to Christ Church to carry us there.

2023 plans

These were listed in the last newsletter and there will be a calendar sent to members in Advent. Two points:

  1. Trip to The Netherlands (March 24th. to 28th.) – we have just six names at present, so there are spaces for another two or three. Pieter Shaw, our host, has great plans for us and it would be good to have a full quota of people. If possible, please reply to me, if you’d like to come, by November 12th.
  2. Please note that the trip to Whitstable in May has been moved to Saturday 13th. because of the Coronation.

London Organ Day

This will be on Saturday, March 11th; details here.

Recital

Our member Norman Harper will be playing at St. Paul’s Church. Rectory Grove, Clapham, SW4 (which we visited last year) on Thursday, November 10th. at 7p.m. Richard Pilliner will send a round up of recitals very soon, including a poster about Norman’s recital. If you would like Richard to add details of concerts and recitals in your area, please contact him quickly.

Next newsletter

I plan to send this out on November 30th. Do let me have any news which you would like included.

All good wishes,
John
