{"id":2455,"date":"2016-01-24T17:29:49","date_gmt":"2016-01-24T17:29:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/?page_id=2455"},"modified":"2021-10-16T16:01:52","modified_gmt":"2021-10-16T16:01:52","slug":"1-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/?p=2455","title":{"rendered":"09 My Church February 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>St Swithun&#8217;s the Evangelist, Hither Green<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/3Nick75.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-50 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/3Nick75.jpeg\" alt=\"3Nick75\" width=\"74\" height=\"97\"><\/a>I am Nicky Jones an organist on the rota of organists for <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.saintswithuns.org.uk\/\">St Swithun&#8217;s Hither Green<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and Honorary Secretary of the Southwark and South London Society of Organists.<\/p>\n<p>I am playing &#8220;Te Splendor et Virtus&#8221; &#8211; Chorale No 15 from Le Tombeau de Titelouze Opus 38, composed in 1942 by Marcel Dupr\u00e9 . Dupr\u00e9 was inspired by the work of Titelouze (1563-1633), French composer, poet and organist of the early baroque period. &#8220;Te Splendor et Virtus&#8221; is, like&nbsp; all 16 chorales from the collection, a reworking of Titelouze&#8217;s organ settings of plain chant hymns for use during the litany. In my view this piece is really quite beautiful as well as being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3LUryEG9z4o\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2494 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01.jpg\" alt=\"01\" width=\"243\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01.jpg 2045w, https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01-1024x722.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/01-624x440.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a>measured in pace, reassuring and unpretentious. &nbsp;I &nbsp;found too that Dupr\u00e9\u2019s very precise fingering instructions and the associated requirement for legato playing provided a real opportunity to attempt to &nbsp;improve technique!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The organ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The present organ in St Swithun\u2019s Church,Hither Green was built by Peter Conacher of Huddersfield, however, it did not begin life here.&nbsp;Sometime during the nineteenth century the organ was originally installed at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, home of the Duke of Marlborough. In 1891 a larger organ was built for Blenheim, by Father Willis (of Henry Willis and Sons of London); this new organ had four manuals and pedals, with seventy stops \u2013 huge for a private residence!I<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1453724470265_17066\">It was probably two years later that the Conacher organ was installed in St. Swithun\u2019s by Father Willis. It was installed in the north east of the church (where the pipes are today), and was a three manual instrument, with nine speakin<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2463 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/05a.jpg\" alt=\"05a\" width=\"153\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/05a.jpg 2513w, https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/05a-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/05a-868x1024.jpg 868w, https:\/\/sslso.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/05a-624x736.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 153px) 100vw, 153px\" \/>g stops on the Great, ten on the Swell and six on the Choir; the Pedal organ had just three stops (which was typical of Conacher) and there were five unison couplers. The full specification is given&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npor.org.uk\/NPORView.html?RI=N16392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.npor.org.uk\/NPORView.html?RI=N16392<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1453724470265_17051\">In 1959 Sidney George Tuddenham, then St Swithun\u2019s organist, paid \u00a35000 for the rebuilding of the instrument.
