Evensong in Rochester sung by Amici Cantantes

This is an invitation to individuals and groups to come and sing Evensong at Rochester Cathedral with me on Saturday 15 January 2011.  We shall again call ourselves “Amici Cantantes” (”Singing Friends”).  Graham Powell from St. Peter’s, Limpsfield will play the organ.  He and I have done a large-scale Evensong like this every other year  since 1999.
You and your friends are invited!
Music:   Introit: “The First Disciples,” by John Webber
Responses - William Smith of Durham (five parts in A flat)
    Psalm 78, vv.1-17 (anglican chant)
Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis by Basil Harwood in A flat
Anthem: “Then shall a star,” by Felix Mendelssohn
    Two hymns, to be announced.

Copies:  (a) From September, I shall be able to lend copies of the Smith, Harwood and Mendelssohn.  I shall also provide the introit, plus the psalm and hymns as we shall sing them.  I shall post music when it is possible to do so, but for bigger groups we may have to arrange collection.  (b) If you wish to buy your own copies, I recommend Britten’s Music.  You can ‘phone them on 0800 052 1900 or 01932 350606 or e-mail Kim Thornewell at kim@brittensmusic.co.uk (please mention my name as the link).  Here are the details: the Smith is only available from “Tudor Preces and Responses”, published by RSCM (£3-80 in 2008); the Harwood is available from Music Sales (originally Novello) and the Mendelssohn is published by two firms, at cheap prices.  Differences we shall have to sort out in rehearsal.  The Mendelssohn  is also in the New Church Anthem Book (OUP) as anthem no.97; this is the version which I shall use.  It is preceded by a short soprano solo (”When Jesus, our Lord”) and a trio for TBB “Say, where is he born?”) which we’ll probably sing with all the men.

Rehearsals: the early date in January means that one rehearsal will be in the autumn:
Sundays, November 21st.and January 9th. from 2.00 to 4.00p.m. at Beckenham Baptist Church, Elm Road, (off Beckenham Road) Beckenham, BR3 4JB (near my house)

    Related matters:
Timing on the day: please arrive by 1.15; 1.30p.m. rehearsal; approx. 2.45p.m. a drink will be provided; 3.15 Choral Evensong, all at Rochester Cathedral
Robes:  everyone will need to be robed (except the young people from Beckenham, who will have their choir uniform).  At the Sunday rehearsals, we always manage to find robes for those needing to borrow them.  Please be prepared to lend robes if you have spares.
CD recording:  I hope to record the service and offer copies to singers and their friends.
Meal:  I aim to book a nearby restaurant for a meal after the service.  Please add your names to the list at a Sunday rehearsal.
    Cost:  there will be a charge of £2-50 per adult singer to cover expenses and library loans;
please pay this at the Sunday rehearsals.

I should love to hear from everyone and hope that you will want to take part.  Do ask your friends along!  Please post or e-mail your reply slip, completed, as soon as you like.  It would be helpful to hear from singers from September 1st.  Please don’t send money with your replies.  The reply slip below can be used for one person or for members of an entire choir.  I shan’t respond to replies until September, when music is sent.

    REPLY SECTION
