    Leeds Parish Church
    Sixth Annual
    Battle of the Organs

    Wednesday 9 June 2010 at 7.30pm

The Battle of the Organs has become something of a tradition after the prototype event of 2005 directed by resident Leeds organist David Houlder. Now in its sixth year, the Leeds Battle of the Organs is an excellent opportunity to hear the magnificent Leeds Parish Church organ in all its splendor alongside several splendid pipeless instruments from Makin Organs, whose generous cooperation is crucial to the realization of the concept.  This year, Makin is bringing a very comprehensive three-manual-and-pedal instrument as one of its three organs.

In 2010 we welcome back our great friends from Liverpool Cathedral, Professor Ian Tracey and Daniel Bishop. The Leeds home team likewise again fields a full complement of Organists - David Houlder himself (LPC Sub Organist and Director of the Girl’s Choir) and the Church’s Master of the Music Dr Simon Lindley.

    Dr Simon Lindley said
“The annual Battle of the Organs each summer at the Parish Church of Leeds is one of the most enjoyable events of the season and always attracts very good support. The fact that all the organs and organists can be easily seen as well as heard makes for a very entertaining evening’s music-making and I can commend it to our friends and supporters as much as to “first-timer” attenders. The programme always contains some hilarious novelty items. Don’t miss it!”

The evening’s programme is devised by Leeds organist David Houlder, on the staff of the Parish Church since 2003, and previously Sub Organist at Liverpool over two decades.

We are very grateful to Dr Keith Harrington and Makin organs for supplying so many wonderful instruments.

The Battle of the Organs is promoted by The Friends of The Music of Leeds Parish Church - an organisation dedicated to securing the future of almost 200 years of choral tradition at historic Leeds Parish Church. The Leeds concert is free, and a retiring collection will be taken for the Parish Church’s Choral Foundation Appeal-for more information on the Battle of the Organs, please contact:

Note to readers: we have been asked to advertise this event. These can be very entertaining, as the one at St Paul’s Cathedral was on 22 April.

A graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, Tom Bell’s studies were supported by prestigious scholarships from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Michael James Music Trust and the Royal College of Organists. Tom was taught by Kevin Bowyer in Manchester, and Jacques van Oortmerssen in Amsterdam.
As a soloist Tom has performed widely. Recent highlights have included a live broadcast on Dutch classical radio; the Oundle International Festival; the inaugural Glasgow International Organ Festival; Canterbury, Edinburgh (St. Giles’); Guildford, Coventry, Blackburn and Manchester Cathedrals and trips to Norway and Bulgaria (National Palace of Culture, Sofia and Music Festival Hall, Varna).
In addition to his duties as Director of Music to the Parish of Esher, Tom is busy as an organ teacher, and works closely with the St.Giles International Organ School (for whom he is a tutor), Oundle for Organists and the Royal College of Organists. Tom is particularly keen to introduce the organ to new audiences, and is involved with a number of exciting education projects and initiatives, particularly Organworks at Eton College.
Tom enjoys playing a wide range of music, from before Bach to a very long time after, and tries to present varied programmes. He does, however, have a particular affection for music written after 1900, and is very active in persuading living composers to write new repertoire. He has a more-than-passing interest in steam locomotives, especially when coupled(!) to real ale… http://tombell-organist.net
